Submission Guide

2021 APEC App Challenge - Submissions Guide

Presentation Video

We highly recommend you spend time on your presentation video. You are mainly judged on the less than 5 minutes that you present. Of course, we take a look at your source code and your submission page as well, but your video is the most important element for judging time. Don’t leave it for the last minute, as it may take longer than you expected to upload your video and share your link with us.

Structure your pitch

This is our suggested structure for your pitch, but feel free to customize it based on your presentation:

  • Intro (presented in 30 seconds)
    Introduce your team members.

  • Problem statement (presented in 30 seconds)
What problem did you identify that is ripe for solving? How big is the problem?

  • Impact (presented in 30 seconds)
How could solving the problem add to the business? What company objectives are you going to address and achieve?

  • Product (presented in 1 minute)
Introduce your product. What unique selling point (USP) does it address? Boil it down to a simple statement and highlight 3 key features or less.

  • Demo (presented in 2 minutes)
Demo your work. Since you only have 2 minutes to show off your product and idea, don’t sweat the small stuff. There is no need to stress over the details that nobody sees when you don’t need to. This also reduces the likelihood of technical difficulties, which eats up your valuable presentation time on pitch day.

  • Wrap up (presented in 30 seconds)
Conclusion and summarize the impacts your application add to the business

Try to not go over 5 minutes for your pitch as it will add a negative point to your submission.

Sample Slides

Here are the sample slides you can use to structure your presentation. This is just to help you navigate your slides, feel free to change them as you wish.

Reminder

We are creating a summary video of this event, and we need you to take videos of the team working together, screenshots of your work, and anything we can include in our video!
This is the video we made for 2020.

If you would like to be included in the 2021 video, please upload your screenshots/videos here.

Judging Criteria

  • Address the Challenge
Did the team understand the complexity of the problem and offer a creative solution?

  • Completeness and Overall Quality
Does the product work smoothly? Is it testable, and can the group show that there is a minimum viable product that addresses the intended target population?

  • Impact on the Target Audience
How effective is the project with respect to the overall goals of the challenge?

  • Design
Did the team think about the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX)? How well designed is their demo? How are the graphics, or how is the human-computer interaction? Is it easy to use or does it require a lot of training to master the demo?

  • Scalability
How can the solution reach increasingly larger populations of users while remaining sustainable?

  • Innovation and Uniqueness
How creative has the group been in solving the challenge? Did they come up with an original approach, or did they follow existing patterns and solutions?
